Health insurance is expensive, but if you need it, here are things you can do to lower your insurance costs.

Shop Around. Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to shop around. Get at least three price quotes. Don?t shop on price alone. Ask friend and relatives for their recommendations.

Find A Group Plan. There is strength in numbers in buying health insurance so your first choice should always be to participate in your employer?s health plan. As part of a group plan you will enjoy discounts on premiums as well as broader coverage.

Consider COBRA. When you leave a job, you don?t necessarily need to leave your health insurance behind. Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA), certain employers that provide a group health insurance plan must offer most employees who would lose their coverage the option to continue it for up to 18 months. The catch is that the employee will have to pay the full premium, up to 102 percent of the employer?s cost. The extra 2 percent is an administrative fee.
